pretty awesome teaching in the school's newly renovated gymnasium! We have had a great start to the school year! I'm also excited to have a student teacher, Miss Kastens, with us this semester. One of my goals has always been to use time wisely during P.E. class. The students come to P.E. once a week for 45 minutes, therefore it's important for us to have routines and procedures in place so that no time is wasted on management issues. We follow social contracts, have student leaders each class, and reward positive behavior. My returning students have had a very smooth transition back to school, and my new students have done a great job learning the rules and procedures! Daily Dozen Warm-Up Routine - The students begin class by participating in a choreographed, fun mix of 12 exercises. I have many videos of our routines. Check them out below!
I am writing this post to say THANK YOU to the KHEF! They fulfilled my grant request again this year for more physical education equipment. They are so generous and eager to support teachers in our district!
For several years, I have been organizing my P.E. classes by rainbow colors. I enjoy purchasing equipment in rainbow sets. This makes classroom management a breeze. The students are able to quickly locate and clean up equipment. This year I was able to purchase an ORANGE and a PURPLE mat, which completed my rainbow set of mats! I have been wanting these mats for a long time, and it's so great to have them now! I'm sure these mats will be used and enjoyed by students for many many years to come.
Gym mats are used for a LARGE variety of skills and activities in P.E. class. Not only are they used for tumbling and gymnastics skills, but also for games involving throwing and catching skills. Mats can be used as "walls", "ships", "houses", and much more! It's fun to be creative while teaching elementary P.E.
The students were so excited the first time they walked into the gym and saw the mats set up. Because of a coupon deal from the company, I was also able to purchase equipment for the game which I call, "SORRY!". Please see pictures and videos below for a glimpse of how I've used this equipment this year.

Happy Spring! Time has been flying by this year, and I realized I haven't posted in awhile. I want to share some videos of the Dance Unit the Music teacher and I taught to our students.
We have a tradition of combining our classes to teach a dance unit together the week before spring break. We always have fun, and the students learn a large variety of dances! We always begin by explaining the benefits of dance to the students, then we review the I CAN statements.
The I CAN statements are:
I CAN move to music.
I CAN keep the beat.
I CAN try my best.
Below is a list of some of the dances we taught this year. We have found that students enjoy the variety of dances we teach, and 99% of the students feel comfortable participating!
Line / Group Dances - Cotton Eyed Joe (video below), Can't Stop the Feelin', Celebration Improv Dance 3rd-5th grades - (video below) Circle Dances - Chicken Dance (video below), Spring Dance (K-2nd), Buffalo Gals (K-2nd) Limbo Rock - This year I purchased a Limbo stick and the students loved doing the Limbo Rock (video below) Just Dance - At the end of our lesson we like to pull up some Just Dance videos for the students to follow along with. I am so happy to announce that our school raised $5,806 for the American Heart Association through the Kids Heart Challenge event! Many thanks to the families who donated and/or volunteered for the event. The students had a great time! Please check out the videos and pictures below.
I am so happy to share videos of our Jump Rope performance from the Jump Rope for Heart assembly
yesterday. My students did a terrific job! I am so proud of their hard work!
This performance has become a fun tradition at our school. I wrote this routine a few years ago, and we perform it to the song "Jump" by Van Halen. In the fall, my students all practice jump rope skills in PE class. I allow an opportunity for students to "master" tricks, which I decided means they can perform it 10 times in a row and finish with side swings. The students who are able to master the most tricks are invited to perform in the assembly. We have special practice times and then perform at the end of the Jump Rope for Heart Kickoff assembly. It's a great way to motivate all of our students to learn jump rope skills, and focus on being heart healthy! I also use this routine as a warm-up for my 4th-5th grade students in the month of December.
