Jump Rope for Heart Assembly 2019

I am so happy to share videos of our Jump Rope performance from the Jump Rope for Heart assembly
yesterday.  My students did a terrific job!  I am so proud of their hard work!

This performance has become a fun tradition at our school.  I wrote this routine a few years ago, and we perform it to the song "Jump" by Van Halen.   In the fall, my students all practice jump rope skills in PE class.  I allow an opportunity for students to "master" tricks, which I decided means they can perform it 10 times in a row and finish with side swings.  The students who are able to master the most tricks are invited to perform in the assembly.  We have special practice times and then perform at the end of the Jump Rope for Heart Kickoff assembly.  It's a great way to motivate all of our students to learn jump rope skills, and focus on being heart healthy!  I also use this routine as a warm-up for my 4th-5th grade students in the month of December.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!  My students have had a great month filled with tons of activities.  Check

2.  Volleyballs Skills - We played "Rockets and Satellites" and "Angry Birds" as a fun way to practice these skills.  Students also worked with partners to practice the underhand and overhand serves.  Here is a video explanation of Angry Birds game.  Both of these games allowed students a chance to practice volleyball skills, and also catching, throwing, defense, rolling, teamwork and cooperation.

3.  Germ Ball (Video explanation)- In this fun game, students learned about germs and how to properly wash hands, roll a ball, play defense, dodge, teamwork and cooperation.

4.  Jump Rope Skills - Check out these videos of how I teach the students how to "master tricks".  Continuous Criss CrossEasy jump rope tricks (side swing pattern, 360, jacks), criss cross, pretzel, doubles, continuous doubles, forward to backward.  Here is a video of how I teach basic jump rope skills.  I have TONS of jump rope videos, so if you'd like more info just search jump rope on my youtube channel.

5. Hot Potato (Video of 2nd gradehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTDFCFiYsdY) - We played this in the Music room when the gym was being used for concert rehearsal.  It was fun!  We also played Nutrition Bingo!

6.  Warm-Up Activity - 4th-5th graders have been doing my "jump rope routine" (video here) as a warm-up.  3rd graders are working on jump rope skills at their own pace, and KKnights-2nd graders did the December Daily Dozen.

Wishing everyone health and happiness over the holidays!

First Weeks of School 2018

I am SO pleased with how my students got right back in the swing of things
these first few weeks of
school!  It is very important for students to follow our Code of Conduct, and our procedures (SOPs) because we don't want to waste any of our precious time in P.E. class due to management issues!  The students come once a week for 45 minutes, and each minute is packed full of important learning, playing, exercising and sharing.  Our new PreK and Kindergarten students are also doing a great job learning the expectations.  We are off to a GREAT start!
Sit and Reach Test for Flexibility

Check out what we have learned this month:  Videos are available for some activities!

Daily Dozen Warm-Up - Click here for a video of our September Daily Dozen (Bonus - your child can do this at home!  Check out my youtube channel for more Daily Dozen videos).

Equipment:  Students have played with a variety of different balls, bowling pins, balloons and paddles, scooters, and learned how to clean up.

Games and Skills:
Test Your Skills - Check out the VIDEO HERE!  Students did tons of locomotor movements, animal walks, soccer, basketball and scooters.  I also used this time to test students on the Sit and Reach and Push-Ups.

Rollerball and Pinball - 3rd-5th graders played these games to practice bowling skills, defense, and teamwork.

All students played the Color Run Game and a variety of tag games such as Fruit Loop Tag, Fruit Tag (just like Fruit Loop Tag but talked about nutrition and healthy eating!), Stop and Go Tag, and Bubble Tag.  This teaches them how to run, stop and dodge safely and how to cooperate with others.

Personal Space and Spacial Awareness - All students learned about how to move safely while playing and how to stay in their own space during games and also listening times.

PACER Running Test - 3rd-5th graders participated in the PACER Pre-test

Curl-Up Test - 3rd-5th graders did a Curl-Up Pre-test (video demonstration).

It has been a great month, and I look forward to October!
Showing how we take turns during the Test Your Skills activity.

This is how we clean up the balloons by giving it a "half hug".  We clean up the balls with a hug with both arms!

Mileage Club / Walking Track

The mileage club / walking track started up again at school after Labor Day break. Many of our
Students come to get a punch on their card.
Great work!
students have already reached 10+ miles!  The mileage club is an optional recess activity for all of our PreK-5th grade students.  Students who want to participate get a yellow card from our lovely volunteer, write their name on it, and get started!  Each time a lap is completed, they get a heart shaped punch on their card.  Each card is worth 5 miles!  When the first card is completed, the students receive a beaded chain necklace along with their first toe token.  More toe tokens are earned as students complete additional cards.

Many thanks to Mrs. Peebles (many of our students call her "Grandma Peebles")!  She keeps this program running for us during the lunch recess!

Mrs. Peebles is our wonderful volunteer!
Research shows that physical activity increases brain function.  In addition, physical activity improves self-esteem and reduces anxiety and stress.  The mileage club / walking track is a great way for students to get exercise, stay in shape, enjoy recess time with their friends, and earn prizes!

Field Day 2018 "Superheroes" and REAL HEROS!

Field day is always one of the favorite days of the year for many students.  This year certainly was memorable!  We had many parent volunteers which made it very successful.  Our PTO is always so generous, and they work hard to make this day great for everyone.  I'm thankful we have such strong support from our families!

This year our PTO selected "Superheros" as the theme for Field Day.  I thought this would be a great opportunity for a learning experience for our students.  I invited some REAL HEROS to our field day!  All it took were a few phone calls and emails to arrange for some very special guests.  We were blessed to have the Firefighters, Police, and National Guard volunteer at our field day this year!  They each ran training courses for the students.  The children LOVED it, and they were inspired to be in the presence of real life heros!  Many thanks to these heros who spent their day with us!

Please check out the pictures and videos below for a glimpse of our day!
