I am writing today to say THANK YOU to the KHEF for fulfilling my grant request this year! The
KHEF has been incredibly generous to the Physical Education department the past several years! I have been able to purchase much needed equipment, and have enjoyed being able to get these items in "rainbow sets". The rainbow sets include equipment in each color of the rainbow. They are fantastic because they help with classroom management, and they look terrific. The student's eyes LIGHT UP when they walk in the gym and see this awesome equipment that they get to use! I have been organizing my class by rainbow colors for the past 10 years, and it works very well!
This year I was granted funds to purchase the rainbow set bowling pins from Gopher. I was lucky enough to receive this two weeks before the Covid-19 school closure. I am so glad the students were able to enjoy the bowling pins this year. I am looking forward to using them for many MANY years to come!
Check out the activities we had time to do before the school closure:
Guard the Castle Game:
Bowling with Pre-K class:
Battleship Throwing Game:
Red pins were used for an obstacle course during the Kids Heart Challenge event on Valentine's Day.
I love the white mat that comes with each set of pins.
All set up for the game!
Ready to play Battleship.
Last year I received the purple and orange MATS to complete my rainbow set for mats.

In the spirit of field day, this week's challenge for my P.E. students is to build an obstacle course at home! Take a look at the videos and directions below. Have fun!
Build an Obstacle Course
Step 1:
Ask your parent’s permission to build an obstacle course.
Decide if it will be built outside or inside.
Step 2:
Gather items to be used as obstacles. Look in your house, garage, or use things that you find in your yard. Here are some examples: Sticks, twigs, trees or logs, Boxes, Paper plates or stepping stones, Sidewalk Chalk, Pool noodles, Swing set, jungle gym, or trampoline if you have one, Balls, jump ropes or hula hoops
Step 3:
Decide how you will use your items. Will you go around, across, over, under or through the item?
Step 4:
Create a start and a finish line.
Step 5:
Try out your obstacle course! Ask your family members to time you to see how fast you can complete it. Ask your family members to also join in the fun and try out your obstacle course!

Watch this Read Aloud of “Sally Sore Loser” to learn about good sportsmanship!
Practice good sportsmanship by playing the game Hot Potato with your family. Choose an item to be your “potato”, sit in a circle, and play this music. Pass the potato nicely around the circle. When the music stops, whoever has the “potato” is out, and sits in the middle of the circle until the next time the music stops. Each time the music stops, switch with the person who is sitting in the middle.

Happy Spring! Check out the links below for activities and exercises you can do today and over the weekend.
Push-Up Challenge: Video demonstration of my 5th graders. You can do this at home by yourself or with your brothers/sisters. Use a stuffed animal if you don't have a ball. How many can you do? Curl-Up Challenge: Video demonstration of my students. You can also do this by yourself at home by hooking your feet under your coach. Put your stuffed animal on the couch too so they can "help you count". :-) How many can you do? Basketball Challenge: If you have a basketball and hoop at home, play HOT SHOT (click for a video demonstration). How many baskets can you make in one minute? Play as many rounds as you can! Don't have a basketball? Use a soccer ball, baseball, or other ball to practice your kicking, throwing or catching. Dancing Challenge: Click on the links below for some dances!
We've only been off of school for three days and I already miss my students so much! I hope everyone is staying healthy and trying to keep a positive attitude. The sun is shining today here in Michigan, and I am thankful for that! Please take a look at the links below. There is a short exercise video for you to follow along with, and some jump rope challenges. Try to get outside in the fresh air and do something active like take a walk, bike ride, roller blade, or just run around your yard! If you can't get outside, do some dancing inside!

For the past several years, our school has participated in the Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as
Jump Rope for Heart). We hold the event on Valentine's Day. Students participate in a variety of physical activities including jumping rope, obstacle courses and more! The students turn in the donations they have collected for the American Heart Association. If you would like to make a donation, or register your student, follow this link:
At the end of our assembly each year, I have a group of students who perform a jump rope routine to the song "Jump" by Van Halen. It's so much fun, and it motivates the whole school to learn about heart health! Check out the video below!
This was our practice video because I was not able to record during the actual assembly this year.
This video shows the tricks we do and gives demonstrations:
