Back to School 2026-2027!

Welcome back to school!  As your child's PE teacher, my goal is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing learning environment.  Your child will be learning a variety of physical activities this year which can benefit them for a lifetime!

This year I have a student teacher, Brendon Jameson.  He is from GVSU and will be teaching with me the first semester.  More information about Brendon is below.

We are excited to start the school year and welcome all of our students!  Each student has PE once per week for 45 minutes.  Please come prepared with gym shoes and a water bottle.

Mr. Brendon - PE Student Teacher
My name is Brendon Jameson. I am a senior at Grand Valley State University. I am working towards getting my Health and Physical Education degree. I have always loved physical activity, which lead to me playing sports all my life. I wanted to become a teacher to show the importance of activity in a student's academic journey.  My biggest goal as a teacher is to make a difference in kids' lives like teachers have made in mine. I am a middle child from Otsego Michigan and some of my favorite hobbies when I’m not teaching are baking sweets, barbecuing, watching sports, and spending time with the ones I love! I’m ecstatic to be teaching this year and watching how I can grow under a professional's help.

Mrs. Glanzman PE Teacher

I graduated from GVSU with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Movement Science and minoring in Elementary Education.  I have a master’s degree in adult and higher education.  I have been teaching PE since 2005. I am married to my husband Jim, and we have two children.  Our family loves sports!  Our favorites are basketball, tennis, football and volleyball.  In the summer, I enjoy playing tennis almost every morning!  Our family loves spending time on Lake Michigan.

Dance Party for Physical Education Class

It's that time of year again when we prepare for our PE Dance Party!  It's been my tradition to have a Dance Party with each of my classes the week before Spring Break.  We have so much fun!

Preparation:
Prior to the Dance party, we learn about the benefits of dancing.  We also practice our group dances and freestyle dancing so everyone feels ready and confident during the dance party.  I ask families for donations of glow sticks so that every student can have a couple of glow sticks at the dance party.

Set Up:
I hang streamers in the doorway for students to walk through as they enter the gym.  I set up lots of LED and disco lights.  The gym looks amazing!  I also purchase foam glow wands for each student to use during the dance party.  Here is a video clip of students entering (click here).

Rules:
Here is a short video explaining my rules and lesson plan for the dance party (click here).

Group Dances:
Each year we participate in several well-known group dances.  Here is a list of some that may be included.  (DJ Raphi on YouTube is a great resource for the group dances).
Cupid Shuffle
YMCA
Cotton Eyed Joe (4th grade demo click here).  my students performed this for an assembly one year)
Macarena
Hokey Pokey
Party Freeze Dance
Partner Dance - Buffalo Girls (click here for video demonstration)
Circle Dance - Buffalo Girls (click here for video demonstration)

The last 10-15 minutes of the dance party consists of Freestyle Dance.  I play a variety of music for students to dance to.  I also project a Slideshow on the wall with ideas of dance moves.  Students can follow along with the samples or create their own dance moves.

Provide a Play-Based Childhood, not a Phone-Based Childhood!

This post is for PARENTS, TEACHERS, COACHES, AND ANYONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE HEALTH OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS.

This past summer I read the book, "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt.  I want to encourage all of you to read this book, look up an interview from the author on youtube, or read these notes below.  The main message of this book is to encourage parents to provide children with a "play-based" childhood instead of a "phone-based" childhood.

After teaching elementary PE for over 20 years, I have seen a change in the mental, emotional, and physical health of our children.  I believe a major cause of this is the increase of screen time.   This school year, I have become more focused on intentionally talking to my students about participating in physical activities and limiting screen time.

Some of my students have told me they go home after school and play video games ALL NIGHT.  Parents, please set limits on screen time! Encourage your children to get outside, exercise, play, participate in a sport, attend classes such as Dance, Karate, etc.  Take advantage of the opportunities in your community such as organized team sports or the parks and recreation programs.  You can also set family goals such as taking walks around the neighborhood, going for bike rides, walking the dog, playing catch, etc.

Together, we can make a positive impact on our children and improve overall health and well-being!

The gist of this book - Provide children with a "play-based" childhood instead of a "phone-based" childhood.  Keep your children off of social media.  Increase real-life experiences and decrease online activity in order to improve physical, emotional and mental health.

Check out the pictures below of my bulletin boards which are in our school hallway.  I have asked parents to send me pictures of their child participating in sports OR any physical activity (riding a bike, taking a hike, jumping rope, etc).  This is a way to promote sports and fitness at school.

We're still working on adding pictures to this board!

Welcome Back to School!

Welcome back to school everyone! This is my 19th year teaching for Kenowa Hills Public Schools, and I must say, this has been the BEST start to the school year that I have experienced! I feel so blessed to work at KHPS. We have the nicest staff, top notch administrators, wonderful students, and a terrific gymnasium complete with an abundance of equipment for our PE program.
I love the fact that I have many of the same students each year. Most of my students begin here in Kindergarten and continue all the way through 5th grade. My rules and procedures are the same each year, so the students know what to expect and everything runs smoothly. My goal is to MAXIMIZE our time together with lots of movement, exercise, sports and games.

Take a look at what we do in PE class each week:
Do you want to know our rules and procedures for PE class?  Click here to watch a short video.
Space Jam Warm-Up for the first month of school - Click Here
Fitness activity called the "Train Game" - Click Here. (We always have fun music playing while we do this.)
Sports Skills - We learn about a different sport skill and/or physical activity each week.
Awards - I always celebrate positive behavior at the end of class by awarding two students with stars and/or special certificates. (Click here to view my store on Teachers Pay Teachers to view certificates).

So far this year many of the students have learned these things:
1.  Tag Games and "Getting to Know You" games, how to move safely in the gym.
2.  Soccer Activities
3.  Balls - PreK-1st graders learned how to play safely with balls.
4.  Hula Hoops
5.  Scooters
6.  Bowling Activities (Pinball Game)

I hope everyone has a wonderful school year!

Scooter Games for Elementary Physical Education

Today I am sharing some fun and easy scooter activities for your PE classes.  The first thing to mention is that
sometimes I allow "Turbo Speed" and sometimes I do not.  I refer to "Turbo Speed" as to when the student gets a running start (3-5 steps), then gets on their knees or belly. Getting a running start makes the scooter go faster, hence the name "Turbo Speed".  It can be a great workout for children and they love it because it's fun.   Keep in mind, in some scooter games "Turbo Speed" is OK, but in other games it is not safe.  It all depends on the size of the playing area, number of students, and directions in which the players are traveling on the scooters.  Please read below for further details!

Turbo Speed

1.  Scooter Practice - Free Riding in General Space (No "Turbo Speed" allowed):  The students practice riding their scooter safely in general space on their bottom, belly or knees.  I give them about 5 minutes to practice.  They all pretend they have a giant personal space bubble around them.

2.  Scooter Tag:  This is a great game to play after the students practiced riding safely!  Begin the game with 3 people "out" in line by the cone.  All other players begin on a scooter, including the taggers.  Players ride in general space safely (no "Turbo Speed").  If a player is tagged, they get off of their scooter and stand out behind the cone.  Then the next person behind the cones comes into the game and gets on the available scooter.  The line moves quickly so no one is out for very long.  Change taggers every 3 minutes (I use two taggers).

3.  Rainbow Roads: Set up "roads" using matching color cones.  Students ride in a straight line on their road, from one cone down to the other and back.  I match the color scooter to the color cone so even our youngest preschool students can clearly understand where to ride.  This is a great chance for the students to try "Turbo Speed" because it is safe to do so. Depending on your class size and playing area, you can set up several roads.  My gym allows for 7-8 roads.  Students can line up behind any color cone for a turn.

Video coming soon!

4.  Scooter Tow Trucks:  I like to play this game after the Rainbow Roads game.  The tow truck person is pulling the person on the scooter.  The rules are that the tow truck person must WALK, they must stay in FRONT of the scooter person, they must stay on the rainbow roads, and there is no crashing.  The person on the scooter (aka the "broken car") must sit in the middle of the scooter with their feet up, and hold the tow rope (which is a braided jump rope folded in half).   The person on the scooter may not yank on the rope.

5.  Scooter Ships:  Here is a fun way to play with the scooters!  Place 2 scooters under a gym mat.  This is the "scooter ship".  Students may take turns riding on top of the ship while a partner pulls the ship with a hula hoop or jump rope.

6.  Sink the Ship:  This is always one of my student's favorite games of the year!  It is primarily a throwing/catching game, but it also involves scooters!  This has become a well known game in the PE teacher community.  Your students will have a blast!

Top 5 Favorite Games for Physical Education

I can't believe it's been almost a year since my last post.  What a crazy year it has been with the Covid-19
pandemic.  I'm so thankful that I've still been able to teach PE in person most of this school year.

I recently had someone ask me, "What are your top 5 favorite games for PE?".  I figured this would be a great blog post, so here goes!  When the students walk into the gym and see these games set up, their eyes LIGHT UP with excitement!

5. Rockets and Satellites - This is a great game to practice volleyball hits, or you could also make this a throwing/rolling game.  Instructions for the game are in the video!

4.  SORRY! - Since taking this video, I have purchased another set of the Stur-Tee balls from Gopher.   I call this game SORRY because the bases look like the pieces from the board game SORRY.   Great way to practice throwing, catching and defense.  Instructions are described in the video!

3.  Battleship -  Great game for throwing, catching, and defense.  This is like the board game Battleship.  There are two teams and they try to guess where the other team's ships are, and sink them by throwing balls over the mats.  The bowling pins are the ships.  If a ball is caught out of the air when it comes over the mats, that player can take the caught ball over to the other team's side and throw the ball (but must stay on the outside of the black line).  K-2nd graders may stand the pins back up, and 3rd-5th graders can play more competitively and not stand the pins back up (play until a team wins and knocks down all of the pins).

2.  Rainbow Wars - Similar to SORRY, but I'm using a variety of my rainbow set equipment as targets.  Students can earn points for knocking down different items.  Instructions are in the video!

1.  Sink the Ship - Awesome game for throwing, catching, defense, teamwork, and scootering.  Click here for game directions.

Bonus- Guard the Castle - This is a quick and easy game to teach and play.  The set up is very quick!  Click here for printable instructions for the game.

There they are!  Hope you all have a GREAT time playing these with your students!

Thank you KHEF!

I am writing today to say THANK YOU to the KHEF for fulfilling my grant request this year!  The
KHEF has been incredibly generous to the Physical Education department the past several years!  I have been able to purchase much needed equipment, and have enjoyed being able to get these items in "rainbow sets".  The rainbow sets include equipment in each color of the rainbow.  They are fantastic because they help with classroom management, and they look terrific.  The student's eyes LIGHT UP when they walk in the gym and see this awesome equipment that they get to use!  I have been organizing my class by rainbow colors for the past 10 years, and it works very well!

This year I was granted funds to purchase the rainbow set bowling pins from Gopher.  I was lucky enough to receive this two weeks before the Covid-19 school closure.  I am so glad the students were able to enjoy the bowling pins this year.  I am looking forward to using them for many MANY years to come!

Check out the activities we had time to do before the school closure:

Guard the Castle Game:

Battleship Throwing Game:

Red pins were used for an obstacle course during the Kids Heart Challenge event on Valentine's Day.

I love the white mat that comes with each set of pins.

All set up for the game!

Ready to play Battleship.

Last year I received the purple and orange MATS to complete my rainbow set for mats.

Build an Obstacle Course at Home

In the spirit of field day, this week's challenge for my P.E. students is to build an obstacle course at home!  Take a look at the videos and directions below.  Have fun!

Build an Obstacle Course

Step 1:
Ask your parent’s permission to build an obstacle course.
Decide if it will be built outside or inside.

Step 2:
Gather items to be used as obstacles.  Look in your house, garage, or use things that you find in your yard.  Here are some examples: Sticks, twigs, trees or logs, Boxes, Paper plates or stepping stones, Sidewalk Chalk, Pool noodles, Swing set, jungle gym, or trampoline if you have one, Balls, jump ropes or hula hoops

Step 3:
Decide how you will use your items.  Will you go around, across, over, under or through the item?

Step 4:
Create a start and a finish line.

Step 5:

Try out your obstacle course!  Ask your family members to time you to see how fast you can complete it.  Ask your family members to also join in the fun and try out your obstacle course!

Sportsmanship Read Aloud and Hot Potato!

Here are some fun physical activities for this week!

Follow along with these videos for a great warm-up.

Watch this Read Aloud of “Sally Sore Loser” to learn about good sportsmanship!

Practice good sportsmanship by playing the game Hot Potato with your family.  Choose an item to be your “potato”, sit in a circle, and play this music.  Pass the potato nicely around the circle.  When the music stops, whoever has the “potato” is out, and sits in the middle of the circle until the next time the music stops.  Each time the music stops, switch with the person who is sitting in the middle.

Kids Heart Challenge 2020

For the past several years, our school has participated in the Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as
Jump Rope for Heart).  We hold the event on Valentine's Day.  Students participate in a variety of physical activities including jumping rope, obstacle courses and more!  The students turn in the donations they have collected for the American Heart Association.  If you would like to make a donation, or register your student, follow this link:

At the end of our assembly each year, I have a group of students who perform a jump rope routine to the song "Jump" by Van Halen. It's so much fun, and it motivates the whole school to learn about heart health!  Check out the video below!

This was our practice video because I was not able to record during the actual assembly this year.

This video shows the tricks we do and gives demonstrations:

Great start to the school year!

Happy fall everyone!  This year I began my 15th year teaching Physical Education.  I must say, it is
One of our new students!
pretty awesome teaching in the school's newly renovated gymnasium!  We have had a great start to the school year!  I'm also excited to have a student teacher, Miss Kastens, with us this semester.

One of my goals has always been to use time wisely during P.E. class.  The students come to P.E. once a week for 45 minutes, therefore it's important for us to have routines and procedures in place so that no time is wasted on management issues.  We follow social contracts, have student leaders each class, and reward positive behavior.  My returning students have had a very smooth transition back to school, and my new students have done a great job learning the rules and procedures!

Check out the pictures, videos and descriptions below to find out about some things the students have learned this fall.

1.  Daily Dozen Warm-Up Routine - The students begin class by participating in a choreographed, fun mix of 12 exercises.  I have many videos of our routines.  Check them out below!

January/February Daily Dozen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWpdnGXp5tI

  • Spacial Awareness and moving safely
  • Teamwork & Cooperation
  • Fitness - Running (Pacer Test), Stretching, Abdominal and Upper Body Strength Tests
  • Rolling a ball & Bowling
  • Defense
  • Catching and Throwing - Partner Drill
  • Soccer Skills - dribbling, trapping, shooting, goal keeping
  • Volleyball Skills - Underhand Serve, Overhand Serve, Bump
  • Basketball Skills
  • Striking with a racquet
  • Hula Hoops
3.  Games - We always play games to apply the skills that we practice each day.  Check it out:
  • Tag Games - Get to Know You Tag, Bubble Popper, Fruit Loop Tag, Color Run
  • Rollerball and Pinball
  • Soccer Pirates
  • Soccer - Go Score!
