This Thanksgiving, when my family took turns going around the table saying what we are thankful for, my answer was 1) my family and 2) a job that I LOVE! I remember when I was in college at Grand Valley State University, one of my Movement Science professors said his favorite day of the week is Monday because he loves coming to work so much. I remember thinking he must be stretching the truth...........who doesn't love Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays the most? But he was sincere! I do enjoy my weekends, but I am truly thankful for a job that I love coming to! I am so blessed to be able to teach almost 700 students each week, and have the space and equipment I need.
Speaking of equipment, I am also thankful for SHAPE - Michigan, who fulfilled a $500 grant I wrote last spring! I have been using the new equipment on a daily basis for a variety of activities. The grant I wrote was for "Color My Class" equipment, and also two "Cone Qwik Netz". This year I started organizing my class by rainbow colors, and it has been great! The equipment I ordered is all in rainbow sets, so this helps the students stay organized, and also teaches colors to our youngest students. See the pictures below of just SOME of the new things!
I love these cones I bought with my grant money. They hold signs on the top!

I came up with a new game called "Color Collection Relay". We used lots of our new equipment from SHAPE - Michigan!
Color Collection Relay Set up. Each rainbow team had to take turns collecting objects of their color and put it in their hula hoop. The last few minutes, they worked as a team and played with the items they collected.
After the relay they played with their team and the things they collected!

Thankful for our Watchdog program and the fathers who come in to volunteer! This Watchdog is doing the V-Sit during our Daily Dozen Warm-Up!
Check out our November Daily Dozen! Next is a video of my "Thanksgiving Dinner Relay".
I wish I had more time to post! I can not believe we are already half way through November! We
Flexed Arm Hang - underhand grip
have been doing so many fun things in P.E. class. Since the last time I wrote, my students have participated in the following activities:
1. Centers activities in our upper level (log rolls, somersaults, balance beam, tunnel, hula hoop, etc) 2. Flexed Arm Hang -Thanks to Mr. Basaiga for helping with this! See pics below.... 3. Exercise Balls - Thanks to Mrs. Fisher for leading small groups! See pics below... 4. Monkey Bar Ladder (Upper Level - 2nd-5th) 5. Soccer Skills and Games 6. Spider in the Web and Halloween Tag Games
Here is another video of The Turkey and the Farmer which shows the students playing in real time. Thanks for Tracy Zappone for this idea!
Thanksgiving games are not only fun and great exercise, but they provide an opportunity for a mini history lesson on our first Thanksgiving! It's also a great time to have students share their own stories about what their families do to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Thank you Mr. Basaiga for volunteering!
She makes it look so easy!
Mrs. Fisher is a personal trainer and instructor at the YMCA. She is also a parent of two of our students! Thank you Mrs. Fisher for leading small groups. The students really enjoyed it!

We pretend that the black mat is a huge soccer net and use 2 goalie here!
We had another fun week in P.E. class! The students participated in a variety of activities including the Fitnessgram PACER running test (3rd-5th), a fun game called Hide Out (3rd-5th - see video below), Basketball Centers with our Girl's Varsity Basketball Coach (see pics below), and some of the KKnights-2nd grade classes played the Color Game, Spider in the Web, and practiced leaping and the army crawl. And of course, all of the students are getting stronger by participating in the warm-up activity "Daily Dozen".
Here is a video description of the game "Hide Out". Thanks to fellow P.E. teacher Kyle Bragg for sharing this great game. Check out my addition of the "army crawl" challenge! The students had a lot of fun!
Varsity Coach - Mrs. Steenland came in to promote the girl's basketball program. She led the classes in some basketball activities. She has put a lot of effort into expanding our girl's basketball program, which began this week. For more info visit Knights Basketball Academy on Facebook. Thank you coach for coming in to visit us!

This post if for my fellow P.E. teachers out there who are looking for fun games to play before the end of the month! Usually in October my students are participating in fall fitness testing, learning how to do center activities, and/or beginning our soccer unit. The last week of October I like to play some fun Halloween games. Check out the links below to my previous posts with a few printable games, pictures, and videos!
This is our "Star Chart" to keep track of positive behavior!
I am always glad when the first month of school is completed! It means that I know all of my students (almost all 700 by name!) and the students know my expectations in P.E. class. At this point I give the students a "test" on my procedures and if anyone does not pass the test, I re-teach them the procedure during the game time. I am a stickler for using our time wisely in the gym and not wasting any of our minutes on behavior issues. Almost ALL of the students past their "test" the first time. They are very well behaved! This allows us to have lots of fun, and use our time to exercise and play.
Below is a list of what the students "can do" so far. I hope to take some videos soon so you can watch some of this in action! (Update - I just posted 2 videos at the bottom....)
I CAN:
Find my rainbow spot and do the Daily Dozen (How to enter the gym and start the warm-up)
Play "Hot Wheels" (Fitness Activity - walking or jogging around the gym safely in the correct "lanes")
Move safely in the gym / Spacial Awareness / Personal Space
Listen during instruction time
Freeze when I hear the whistle
Clean Up Nicely
Be a leader (I have started choosing a student leader each day for each class period)
SKILLS that students have practiced this month:
Playing safely with rhinoskin balls (Pre-K and Kindergarten)
Hula Hoops (PreK-1st)
Rolling a ball / Bowling
Defensive position
Throwing and Catching (3rd-5th)
Moving safely while playing tag
Walking/Jogging/Stopping and weaving through bowling pins
12 Basic exercises
This is a sample agenda. We always have a warm-up, fitness activity, skills practice and game time. All in a 27 minute session (twice per week)!
I just took a video of our Daily Dozen Warm-Up and Center Activities. See below!

Hi Everyone! This month has been filled with a variety of fun activities for my students. It's amazing how much learning happens in 55 minutes per week! Check out the list of skills we covered over the past few weeks:
These pictures are from the EPEC curriculum.
1) Volleyball Skills
2) Throwing/Catching
3) Jump Rope (in our warm-up "Jump Jog & Stretch")
4) Parachute (K-2nd) - Teamwork and Cooperation
5) Loco-motor Skills (in my new warm-up called "Highway")
6) Tumbling (K-2)
Volleyball is one of my favorite units to teach. 3rd-5th graders learn the Volleyball underhand serve and 4th-5th play Newcomb. My K-2 graders gain experience using the volleyball equipment in other activities.
Soon we will celebrate MARCH MADNESS by dedicating the month to learning BASKETBALL SKILLS! Students will continue with my new "Highway Warm-Up" for the next few weeks as well.
During the last week of school before spring break, the music teacher and I will be combining our classes to teach DANCE. The students will learn how to move to music by performing aerobic dances, line dances and circle dances. This year we hope to introduce square dancing to 4th-5th graders as well!
P.E. Teachers - If you are looking for information on how to teach Parachute skills and games, please click on this link to my parachute blog posts. You will find a link to a printable document with my teaching tips, and also a LOT of videos of games!
Also, If you are looking for a fun warm-up to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, check out my "Gold Coin Exercises" video!
I had a very FUN week with the students! We recently finished up our Jump Rope unit and will begin our Volleyball unit (3rd-5th) and Tumbling (K-2) next week. Between units I like to dedicate one week for what I call "fun fitness games". Fun fitness games are games that are 1)FUN, 2) teach a skill, and 3) help the students become more fit.
Agenda for this week
For all of my P.E. teacher friends out there....I discovered a great new resource! Check out Benjamin Pirillo on youtube! This is where I discovered the "Spaghetti and Meatball" scooter game.
Below are the activities we did this week:
1) New Warm-Up for February - Jump Jog and Stretch
2) Skill - How to ride a scooter SAFELY
3) Scooter Games - Spaghetti and Meatballs
4) Scooter Game - Tow Truck (My 3rd graders were the only classes who had time to learn this- see picture below. The "tow truck" had to stay in front of the "car" and walk. If car went in front of the truck, they had to do 10 exercises.)
Check out pictures and videos below of these activities!

Finally - I have completed my Masters Degree! Last semester so much of my time was consumed by my masters work, that I did not have any extra time to update my blog. I am happy to be able to report that January has been a very fun month of learning at school. Check out the pictures, videos and details below to find out what we've been learning.
Warm-Ups: This month all of the K-5th grade students did what I call the "Pattern Warm-Up". The pattern is "Jog 2, Exercise 10". Students jog 2 laps around the gym, then go to the middle of the gym to perform 10 reps of each exercise. I use cones with signs to display a picture of the exercises. I also add hurdles and/or the agility ladder for students to use during the jogging portion. The exercises we did in the middle were: Leg Stretches, Mountain Climbers or Push-Ups, Picking Berries or V-sit. I like that students can work at their own pace and accomplish a lot of exercise in 3-4 minutes! (See video below)
Skills: Our unit for January was jump rope. I have posted a ton of info regarding my JUMP ROPE unit in the past. Please click HERE to view all of my posts on jump rope. The students learn about single ropes, long ropes and Chinese jump ropes. You may also check my youtube channel for lots of jump rope videos! Here are links to some new videos from this year: Long Rope Game - Snake in the Grass by 1st graders and Chinese Jump Rope - Criss Cross Pattern by 3rd graders.
Games: In addition to the jump rope games/activities, I like to play the game FREEZER in January because it is so cold outside!
Report card grade for P.E. - One grade for P.E. is given on each student's report card. This grade reflects the student's physical skills such as fitness, locomotor, and sport skills. A portion of the grade also reflects the student's effort and participation.
